ABOUT US

        The genesis of IAP Meghalaya State Branch started in October 1990. That year, late Prof. A.C. Barua asked me to organize the North Eastern Regional Conference in Shillong. I was reluctant as we were only three or four pediatricians in Shillong. But  Dr. A.C. Barua encouraged us, us being Dr. M.L. Deb, Dr. S.N. Choudhary, Dr.(Mrs) Synrem, Late Dr. D.S. Lyngdoh, Dr. Sakhina Laloo and Dr. Anita Lyngskor. Together with our friends from Ganesh Das Hospital, Dr.(MRs) T. Kharshiing, Dr. V. Prasad from NEHU and Dr. L. Kharkongor we were able to host the said conference on the 26th and 27th October 1990.

        From then on, we used to meet in Nazareth Hospital monthly. The attendance was very poor. Only three or four members would meet. It was an uphill task.

        In the year 2000-2001 Dr. Debashish Das, Dr. A.C. Khanna (Military Hospital), Dr. Y. Shabong, Dr. S. Keshav, Dr. (Mrs) K.D. Purkyastha joined the state branch. Later Dr. J. Ryndang, Dr.(Mrs) H. Giri, Dr.(Mrs) I. Wahlang, Dr.(Mrs) D. Pde, Dr.(Ms) Susil Longtrai, Dr. A. War and Dr. P.S. Choudhary were added as members of the IAP. We were almost twenty members.

        In April 2002 from the 5th -7th we hosted the VIII East Zone PEDICON  in Shillong and we had the 1st annual conference of IAP Meghalaya state branch (MEGHPEDICON).

        In the Year 2003, we brought out a half yearly Pediatric newsletter, Dr. Kakoli D. Purkayastha being the editor. That same year we organized a symposium of learning disabilities- Dr. S. Ahmed was the Speaker. We also celebrated breast feeding week and ORS week.

        With the starting of NEIGHRIMS in Shillong, Dr. Rashna Das, Dr.Ajit Chhetri, Dr.Himesh Barman, Dr.Saurabh Gohain Duwarah joined the state branch.

         A few new members also joined the state branch namely Dr.Prasenjit Paul, Dr.Sabrina Yesmin, Dr. Palash Ranjan  Gogoi, Dr.Bajop Kharsyntiew, Dr.Pankaj Jain etc.

         With the starting of DNB course in Pediatrics in Nazareth Hospital- Dr. Santanu Deb and his team further strengthened the IAP Meghalaya branch.

By the year 2013- IAP members were thirty three.

As I look back, I am happy to see the growth of IAP Meghalaya State Branch. I wish it will continue to grow in the years to come.
